In the late 1970's Pablo Escobar, the world's most famous drug lord, kept 4 hippopotamuses in a private menagerie at his estate in Hacienda Nápoles, when he was killed in 1993. The hippos were deemed too difficult to seize and move after Escobar's death, and were left on the untended estate. Now there are more than 30 hippos roaming around the nearby Magdalena River.
